Why I probably will never own a house

A fixer upper in Toronto just got sold.  The original asking price was $699,000.  After a bidding war, the final sale price was $1,366,000.

I don't get it.  For twenty some odd years, the average person in Toronto cannot afford the average home in Toronto. How is that even possible?  For those twenty years, I have been expecting the market to collapse.  It never does.  I don't get it.
